MotiMore GameJam Cup – Game development team competition for high school students

MotiMore GameJam Cup for high school students!

Do you ever wonder how someone gets to the point of developing board games, RPGs, PC, console, and app games? Do you often have good ideas on how to present and implement them in game form? Do you play games frequently? Do you think games can be used for learning and teaching? Are you interested in culture and history? Have you always been interested in game development and how to go from idea to realization? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this is the place for you!

The MotiMore gamification platform is organizing a GameJam Cup for students this time on the topic of cultural heritage within the framework of an Erasmus+ project!

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for high school teams consisting of 4-5 members (without age restrictions) who are interested in game development and would like to try their hand at developing an idea. Previous developer experience is not required as the GameJam Cup starts with a game development workshop!

What is the theme?

Anything related to cultural heritage, whether tangible or intangible!

The project under which the GameJam takes place (Erasmus+: Exploring the Past in Peace) reveals history through the UNESCO Cultural Heritage List.

Despite the fact that the concept of cultural heritage is not limited to monuments and collections, it includes living expressions, stories, customs, rituals, crafts inherited from our ancestors, as well as multi-generational observations and knowledge related to the universe and nature.

But why are we dealing with all this?

The project aims at several factors: we aim to preserve historical and cultural memories, strengthen cultural identity and intercultural communication, and modernize education and tourism approaches.

This is why we are also expecting applications from high school teams who would like to try their hand at a full-day GameJam developer cup, where the best teams will receive prizes!

Date, location:

Date: April 29, 2023, Saturday, from 10 am to 4 pm

Location: Alternative Economics Gymnasium, 1035 Budapest, Raktár utca 1., Theater Room

How will the event unfold?

After a brief opening, student teams will participate in a one-hour developer workshop (lecturer: Lambert Tóth, game developer), where they will learn about the most important elements and questions of game development and receive guidance for their own development-ideation process. After this, each team will have 5 hours to work on a randomly assigned cultural heritage and its related game development idea, with mentoring. The development process will be divided into milestones. The format for implementing the idea (e.g., .pdf, .ppt, miro, etc.) and its target audience will be left to the discretion of the teams.

By the end of the day, teams will need to submit their idea via a Google form and in a presentation format of their choice. The submitted materials will be evaluated by an expert jury.

Announcement of results and presentation of the best ideas: May 6, 2023, Saturday, in an online format.
